Appian Public Sector 19: CEO Keynote

In this video, Appian CEO Matt Calkins shares how low-code platforms offer an uncompromised third option: the speed of a packaged application combined with the fit-for-purpose uniqueness of custom development, with the power to build even the most complex mission applications and core systems.

Let’s talk about Appian first

Appian is one of the world-leading platforms. Appian is an industry-leading ‘low-code’ platform that helps businesses to manage their processes, cases, and customers more effectively. We’ve had workflow and case management software for decades – but until the new ‘low-code’ tools like Appian and Pega, you had to buy this software from a vendor with whatever functionality and look and feel that it had.

In other words, the software company would design what they thought good workflow and case management looked like – and you had to adjust your processes to fit in with their software.

Or, you bought an off the shelf package and paid lots of money to have it heavily configured. Or even worse, you built your own system from scratch.

Now, you can buy a platform that allows you to quickly and easily configure the system to do what you want it to do. That’s the power of Appian. And it’s easy to use. Someone can be trained within 2 weeks to be up to speed on how to use their software.

It’s packed with capabilities such as:

  • Case Management.
  • Workflow Management.
  • Chatbots and virtual assistants.
  • AI.
  • Integrations with UiPath

We have Appian trained Developers at Lean Consulting. As with all our Automation development, we start by looking at a process with our Lean experts, who ensure we’re taking a customer-led approach and designing processes to be simple, beautiful, error-proof and waste-free.

If you’re thinking of using Appian or you already have the platform but want to develop more processes and better leverage it’s capability, give us a call today.

Now, what is low code?

Low code is a relatively new term in the application industry. It generally refers to applications that uses a simple interface to develop code – rather than having to write the code yourself. What these applications do is write the code for you. Instead of you learning a programming language, you learn how to use the software and it does the rest.

Video Summary

Every business has two parts – the way people design application and the way people do the work after they have done designing. Appian also works as two halves – creating the pattern of the work and then doing the work. In this video Appian CEO Matt Calkins talked about the low-code platforms and how it will change the world of applications.

“Low code” is an application development platform that enables rapid application delivery with minimal hand-coding and quick setup and deployment.

Low code is 20 times faster than regular code to build an application. From the IDC graph, you can see that from 2018 to 2023 500 million new logical apps will be created and it is an exponential curve. A Gartner analyst recently quoted that “by 2024 low-code development will be responsible for more than 65% of the application development activity”. An Appian customer also reviewed that they can now build an application in a day, where it is normally taken six months to one year to build an application.

Low-code is not only fast but also keeps your app updated always. For example, you have a radio that plays only old songs. But for applications here comes new technologies. If you build your application on low-code, the application is updated automatically, whenever there’s a chance. An application built on low-code also runs perfectly in newly invented devices. Moreover, it runs offline also on those devices.

Low-code development has had its knock when it comes to security and scalability. The right platform has all the necessary security certifications in place, and proven experience with large-scale initiatives. In this case, Appian is a leader in federal low-code. It is one of the first companies to achieve fedRAMP compliance.

Appian low-code has zero code integrations. This isn’t a coding integrations, it is a visual model which allows citizen developers to grasp application design easily. They introspect salesforce and pull back all the information.
Appian has two primary components – actions and workers. As workers, they use Robotic Process Automation along with humans. RPA software robots work with systems and data exactly as people do but with higher accuracy and much faster.

Plus, bots can work 24/7, boosting productivity, freeing employees to work on high-value activities, breaking down data silos, and driving more value from legacy systems. But some Bots can’t go through the handwritten papers. So 80% of documents are given to them. Rest 20% go to artificial intelligence who can read the handwritten documents. There’s a little bit that AI cannot handle ends up on the desk of humans.

In their application, there is an agent desktop for the contact center and this agent can have access to their RPA scripts. They also have an intelligent chat bot for engagement with every new contact.

US airforce has launched a project called “con IT” with low-code Appian which saves eighty million dollars.
With the speed of change, this company is a committed and reliable one in the IT organization.
